Default Anyone ride a scooter?

I literally work 5 minutes drive from where I live and was thinking about riding a scooter to work or getting a beater. I dont really want a third car on the drive so thought about some form of scooter. The old traditional Vespa/Lambrettas style seem to offer maximum protection from the elements but do any suited people on here use a scooter and maybe offer an insight into whats best.
I literally want to stick a helmet and gloves on and ride. I dont hit any main roads and very rarely will I even hit 30mph on my drive to work.
Obviously with winter comming its not an ideal time. I have had a few motorbikes in the past but they have been larger sports bikes.

As you say, not a good time of year to be starting .....

If it rains you will get wet, very wet, so as well as the gloves and helmet you will need to put on some waterproofs.

Any ice or snow and the scooter would be lethal.

Modern Japanese scooters are bulletproof. I would avoid Italian retro stuff.

scooters have small wheels so are naturally unstable. why not ride to work in the summer and walk in winter?

the clothes thing has always been an issue for me so i'd probably just walk

Scooter's are fun Chinese scooter's are very cheap and reliable if you treat them right. (start around the £600 mark)

50cc sounds fine for what you say but if you have any hill's on your journey it will be slow uphill.

Id either go for a 125cc or a 50cc with a 75cc big bore converstion kit. (this will increase the top speed to the 50mph level and uphill speed will be a lot better)
