So one thought is that we use the current engine as our educational tool. Remove it strip it down and work out how it all goes back together. Then potentially we can buy two new engines one in the car, one to rebuild taking time and doing it properly. So new components where necessary or appropriate. Leaving it on the bench for when its needed.

Current plan is to keep it standard, unlike PBMW we can pretty much modify to our hearts content so the thought of going high compression, aggressive cams and nearly 220bhp does appeal the £3k cost doesn't...... (yet).

I've got to say that it sounds like either HG or oil pump or both...

Do these engines have issue with oil surge or the crank whipping the oil in the sump?

The ticking sound may have been the oil pump struggling to pick up oil either because it was all one side of the sump or full of bubbles from being whipped by the crank... I can't remember how modified the car is in terms of tyres, suspension etc.

Worth investigating - might be worth looking at a dry sump or something if the above is happening. Expensive but might save money in the long run... especially if you look at modding the engine a bit...

Good plan
Get a good runner in to get you away (with baffled sump and oil temp/pressure gauge)
Use the dead one to slowly build up your "preferred" set up!

Could we put an oil pressure/temp sensor between oil filter and the oil filter housing?
Would that make sense or be a stupid idea......

That would sure be the easiest way to get the one done.

I have a take-off on the filter housing of the Fury for the oil cooler which has a pressure sensor mounted on it, so I don't see why not.

We drilled and tapped the sump drain plug in my first Elise to put the temperature gauge into.

Yep that's where they are on my S
sandwich plate between filter and mount
Temp and pressure transducers screw in to that
Have a look at the SPA Dual gauges, they do a neat single 52mm one with both pressure and temp on it

Looks like Lee has already told the story - but not all of it.

What he failed to omit was that we felt we had gained 2+secs per lap at Oulton from some excellent advice we received.

I think we've managed to source a race mechanic. The first job is for him to take a look at the engine - the thoughs are at the moment something in the bottom end has gone, perhaps the bearings?

We now need to have a think what to do about engines in general.

The temperature isn't really the problem, it's the pressure. Two guages would be worthwhile though.

From doing a bit of reading and asking around we will probably be looking at a donor engine and (as a minimum) replacing the shells and head.

We should probably replace the radiator while we are at it.

And we still need to drop another 50kgs at the least. I think there's 10kgs to be had of the underside of the car.

I guess the underseal must weigh a bit - get your heat gun out!

replace metal fuel cap with a rubber one?

non-essential wiring eg reversing lamps. stereo?

headlining?

heater?

plastic fuel tank instead of metal?

bonnet release mechanism?

perspex instead of glass?

must be an interesting challenge
