I think it's fair to say that it's not the cars...it's the drivers.
But open diffs on RWD cars in the snow wont help at all

This thread is funny.
I did hear of a survey of BMW 1 series drivers, and over 75% thought their car was fwd. Kind of explains why this person put the snow chains on the front wheels.
Not sure what that girl thought was going to happen. When you push a car toward a building, there's a fair chance your going to hit it
Not sure why that person felt they should film it instead of go outside and help her, or at least offer her some advise out the window

Why would most owners know or care that the 1 series is RWD?
With all the electronics on the car for 99% of the year they do an extremely good job( maybe too good) of isolating the driver from any need to know.
Unlike the S2000 which catches 'em out all year round

That (presumably) auto box must have a facility to put it directly in 2nd.
First time I tried it (across and + or - ) and "Sport" appeared in the display I did wonder.
You can't even keep it in second, your speed drops and it drops to first.

Shopman, it is the unique selling point of the car; The ultimate driving machine is rear wheel drive.
Remember the adverts on release? Prodigy's "you'll be under my wheels" with a kid on a big wheel trike?
The whole crux of the advert is: front drive is for kids, rear drive is good.
I would say that if the BMW owners don't know it is rear drive then that is a failure in their marketing.
GarethB, that sucks. What car is it? Does it have a "winter" mode? Perhaps accessible by holding buttons down or something?

I'd say 90% of diesel 1 series owners bought because it's comfy, goes extremely well, does 48mpg has cheap road tax, is well made and has a BMW badge.
