I tried both ... and bought a 330d LCI (245ps) 0-60 in 6, 0-100 in 15 dead according to Autocar. It surprises many cars and is all I need.

FWIW I tried a 335d and preferred the 330d LCI - being a single turbo (albeit a variable vane type one) it felt quicker on the road than the 335d which is very, very linear. Over 60 the 335d was definitely quicker and has a 0-100 time according to the mags of 13.5 .... 0-60 is the same though as a 330d ... and kickdown felt exactly the same between the 2 cars at 'normal' speeds.

I would add though that the older 330d's and 530d's do feel quite a bit different and are slower - I have driven quite a few 530d's with every engine version

Economy wise on the test drive the 335d averaged 28mpg ... the 330d 38mpg ... and I am currently averaging exactly 38mpg after 14 months with the 330d which isn't bad considering the amount I use the acceleration I have had 54mpg on a trip back to Surrey from Cambridge ... again, not bad for a car that does 60 in 6 seconds ... doesn't sound too bad being a 6 cylinder diesel either - no V8 granted but not bad considering

Sounds good John, have you considered a remap for the 330d?

Yes, I have ... but it's got 14 months left on the warranty

BMW apparently hook each car up at service time to a diagnostics that links with Germany and compares the ECU files to make sure it is not modified ! If it is the computer automatically puts a 'modified' marker on their system. I had heard rumours of this on forums but this info was from DMS after I enquired regarding their remaps ... I thought this was very honest of them to highlight it and was not something pointed out by other remap companies. Because my car is a 2010 model the ECU has to come out for the remap to be done 'on a bench' so TBH all things considered I am not too keen.

DMS say the car remaps to 290-295bhp .... which I am sure is interesting .... but not for me at the moment.

I was very impressed with DMS though - I know they are dear (£800 for a remap on my car v £400 elsewhere) but the info they provided and their knowledge ... at least on the sales side of things was excellent.

Yes thats true, in the future all your servicing etc will be linked as well as using genuine parts etc. A good way to decline any warranty work.

Typically once in the car lifetime an ECU update is released, and it will wipe over your remap.

If I do get to fancy anything quicker again then rather than a remap I feel a Z4 35i S is in order ... I drove a 35i and it wasn't quite quick enough to temp me ... but the 35i S has another 30-40bhp so that may be interesting .... if they come down a bit more in price ! That said, they are not much more than I paid for the 330d !!

How much torque has it got? compared to a remapped 335d.

Less

Still true.
