Big D is definately the more trustworthy
The N54 is not without issues, tis true.
The High pressure DI fuel pumps are weak, having said that mine holding up okay.
The turbo wastegates can begin to rattle, injectors break (often) and you might get through a couple of coilpacks.
Replaced one coil so far £25 new from a forum bloke, cleaned a sticky vanos solenoid - free and 20min work.
Otherwise at 80k miles its been pretty good for a high performer.

Have a try in one, paddle shift is fun. A mapped 335d is pretty bloody rapid and not much between that and a manula 335i to be fair.
Unless you like the smooth delivery and the noise.
