Default BMW 530d

Sorry folks...Omega is dying a slow-ish death so need to get another car asap. Expect more of these threads.

Has anyone got any advice on the BMW 530d? I recall it being highly admired, and there are a few around the 15 grand mark (03 models with c50k miles) which would be within my budget for this sort of car.

1. Is that a reasonable price?
2. Anything to look out for? Cambelt changes, recalls, things that tend to go wrong etc? 3. What are service costs/intervals like?
4. Likely depreciation over another 1-3 yrs

More questions to follow I'm sure.

If you don't do many miles then it may be cheaper to go petrol rather than diesel. When I looked for a 5 series the petrol models were 1-3K cheaper and as we do few miles the petrol worked out a better buy-and I think its a much nicer drive!

We have an x5 3.0d sport and the engine is fantastic. For a big old bus it really pulls well. MPG isnt great (between 23 and 28 depending on how you drive), I would imagine that the 5 would be a bit better as it has not got as much lard to carry around.

Well my 330d averages about 35 mpg (on a long run on the motorway I've been able to get it up to about 45mpg), and that's with an auto box.
