Default Boxster S 3.4

As I’m sure some of you are aware, I’ve had a run of issues with the S2000’s I’ve owned, one killed and one that proved to be the least reliable car I’ve ever owned. As such it was time to get a new car and I decided that I am done (for the time being) with the S, so the selection process to choose a new car began.

The rules were simple; this is a third car so Wifey was insitant that it had to be a convertible. From that point on the selection critereon fell into place pretty quickly. The car had to have been designed as a convertible from the outset and I wasn’t prepared to take a drop in performance compared to the S. This automatically deselected the Nissan 350/3700Z as well as fast BMW and Audis and their ilk and the MX5.

The choice then pretty much sorted itself out; Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4 or Merc SLK AMG 55. The Merc went as I couldn’t get a decent one in my limited budget and the Z4 has never stewed my juices so a Boxster it was. Although I did have me head turned by a few 996 911s but once the wife found out, the scope creep was soon quashed...

After a lot of searching and a major amount of budget creep,I took the plunge and purchased a 2007 987 3.4 Boxster S from a chap in Cambridge. The car has an massive spec; Carrera 19’ lightweight wheels, Xenons, parking sensors, Bose stereo (which is brilliant), full leather interior and Porsche crested seats (not a requirement, I just like it that someone spent a lot of money on them for nothing more than vanity!).

So far so good. I haven’t really had a chance to have a good play as yet but I really like it. It makes a great noise whether pootling or going full tilt and at all points in between. It’s easy to drive and comfortable on a run, it’s also surprisingly capacious so is practical for touring/holidays.

I’m trying not to make comparisons between the two cars, there are some obvious and well worn ones though. It is more civilised and less raw, it is clinical and I doubt I’ll ever find the limit unless I become a proper ham-fisted numpty (always a possibility) and as such is less involving.

Overall I’m very happy with it and look forward to the summer so I can get to know the car better and really enjoy it. I’ll keep you posted if you’re interested. In the meantime here's a couple of photos.

Congratulations! I expect to see it shortly...

Just keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up.

I have driven one and it's quite a relaxed refined drive.

Makes a nice noise too

Looks good! Am I right in that the post-2007 are the ones with the 'fixed' engine? I've looked into Boxsters before but I keep running into many horror stories

Unless it's really sh**ty weather I'll be at the next Herts meet in it. Having done the shiny side down, rubber side up thing, the novelty has worn off, Plan to be sunny side up moving forward

Most of the previous engine issues were sorted post 07 3.4s. Or at least reduced in prevalence.
