I think some people live entirely in the comfortable bosom of dealer land.

When i bought my M i could not find a compelling private deal. I didnt pay over the odds (i think)

But selling them a car is tantamount to anal rape these days. As gad says they have huge overheads to service.. And generally service helps with that
Forgive me as I've only been involved in business for the best part of four decades but is there some sort of unwritten rule about making a profit that's specific to main dealers?

Should their profit in a car be capped at say, £3K?

I'm sorry but I just can't take this outrage seriously.
I don't think you have to take it seriously if you don't want to.

I think it's laughable, as should you if you're outside of it

But you know as well as I do that most people take it very seriously

And continue to fuel the myth that dealers are somehow acting unreasonably by making a profit

Or if they are allowed to make a profit, there's some notional figure in mind that's acceptable

Anyway, funny to think that 235 will be about £3k on ebay in 10 years from now

That would buy quite a nice kitchen

I think I would rather have the kitchen and a secondhand Evoque for two years than the new Evoque and no kitchen for the same period

Is there some reason she had to have a new Evoque?

I don't mean if she already had a nice kitchen

I don't care about depreciation I have some say in as I buy a bit more sensibly. She gets given a chunk from work and has to buy new with all the tricks, heated steering wheel ffs.

What she loses could have been added to my pot grrrrr

it's been 4 years in the M now so I thought i'd update costs as people often talk about the supposed M tax - it's always nice to quantify i think

My car has certainly been worked hard at times, not as a track car but as a family car, a commuter in all weather. It's not a garage queen (it rarely sees the inside of the garage as the S lives there), it sees a 4yo eating it, kicking it etc. so..

i wont include petrol, it does 16-20mpg unless you go on a schlepp

Running Costs

2012 - £1.6k
Insurance £750
Belt & Inspection £240
Warranty (AUC - incl)
Tyres £630 rears
Tax incl
MOT £40

2013 - £1,560
Insurance £400
Warranty £630
Tax £490
MOT £40
Service not reqd

2014 - £1,380
insurance <£400
Tax £490
Service £350 + oil (£94) £450 (it was serviced when I bought it and has a 2 year interval but I now change the oil annually)
MOT £40

2015 - £1,470
insurance <£400
Tyres £380 fronts
Tinting £50
Tax £490
Interim oil change (by me) - oil £75, filter £15, big huge catch tray £20 total £110
MOT £40
Rear brakes replaced Oct 2015 - £400 DIY discs, pads and sensor

2016
Tax £495
Front discs and pads £350 with the ECP 25% off (HOLIDAY25 code)
Service, Oil, filters, Brake fluid, Microfilters £527
MOT
Front discs and pads £360

Mods
Kidney Grilles £80
Wheel refurb £180
Gearknob £70
Tinting £50
OEM modded exhaust £260
Eisenmann Race exhaust to replace above £1100
I added a dab unit as I couldn't be arsed or inclined to spend silly money to mess about with retrofit £150
Paintjob £850
Comp Wheels ££££
