I worked out the commute to get to the office vs the car:

Car = approx 15 minute drive each way (about 9 miles), about a quid in fuel (?), free parking.

Pub Transport = drive to station (approx 4 miles), parking at station

+ depreciation (due to higher mileage), insurance (extra to incl commuting), extra wear and tear(tyres, brakes, more servicing etc.)

What's the 'proper' cost per mile? You'd need to look at that to get a representative cost.

[QUOTE=lovegroova,Oct 30 2006, 11:27 AM] A quid in fuel for 18 miles, assuming 28mpg, that's 6miles per litre, more like

Ok Drac - the train station is about 4 miles away, the office is about 9 miles away - whats the depreciation on that.... I'm in the office about 2 days a week.

Average it out at 48 weeks/annum

Thats 1728 miles/annum for driving door to door
or
768 miles/annum for driving to the station (plus the added risk of damage in the station carpark vs work carpark)

can't be arsed to get my calculator out, but isn't the common concensus 50p per mile for an average car?

I would class the S as average (depreciatoion wise/fuel economy etc).

Not sure, but to be really accurate you'd have to work out the depreciation of the car sat in your garage going nowhere (i.e. a 12 month old car with 0 miles will still depreciate), then offset that against the mileage-based depreciation (+ road tax, insurance, running costs etc.)
