How about a big bendy CB stlyle aerial attached to the boot with a magnet?

You can either pretend you're a minicab or in Smokey and the Bandit - your choice!
You're brand new and already I like you

(Although an S2000 minicab would be ... er... "interesting"...)

There is an alternative actually, which is used in Europe called Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), however DAB is more widely adopted throughout the world now so I can't see it being phased out to be honest..

What about satellite radio? It's quite big in the US I understand, and it's powerful enough not to need a dish so works okay in cars. And then you can cover all the UK and Europe with one transmission.

I've always understood DAB to be a) poor quality, and b) poor coverage, but I have to admit I've never had it.

a) most stations are broadcast at 128kbps, some are 160kbps

b) 85-90% coverage, with additional masts being installed all the time

I'm not sure Sirius and XM (Satellite in the USA) would take off in the UK, as our radio 'model' is very different to that over the water - we all expect our radio to be free in the first instance.. Just my own opinion, of course...

DAB+

Heard something about DAB+'s arrival meaning DAB sets will soon be obsolete, but didn't pay much attention as I never listen to the radio except for traffic news.

Aah right I see

According to http://www.worlddab.org DAB+ is just an additional codec that's broadcast across the existing DAB service

As far as DAB being obselete is concerned, I don't think that will happen anytime soon - all the PURE units can take updates from a PC/Mac so they could be upgraded to receive DAB+ if/when it gets implemented in the UK..., and I doubt they're the only units that can do this..
