What's your budget/ criteria?
The Cayman is really nice but your looking at the thick end of 50 grand once you've put the essential options on it. For that money I'd be looking at a second hand 996 Turbo.
Currently having a dilemma myself thinking about another car, part of me wants another S and part of me thinks I should get something different and more powerful.

I'd avoid both the Caymen and the Z4 Coupe until they were a couple of years old! I shudder to think of the depreciation of these things!
I agree with SimonPrelude... Noble. 3 litre v6 twin turbo road racer!

For the sort of money that the these cars cost I would rather buy a used 911. What are the prices of 997s like now?
Really can't see the sense of another S2000 - it's not sufficiently different to warrant the cost to change.
If a convertible is a must, what's wrong with a 987 Boxster S? The styling isn't much different to the Cayman.
Personally, I'd hang onto it for another 12 months and see what you can pick up a used Cayman or Z4M for next Spring, if those are the two that are floating your boat.
(Or see how the TVR "restructuring" pans out and consider a Tuscan 2 or T350 if the company is still viable next year)

Is there something in the water in the Chester environ? It makes owners most dissatisfied and warble on about alternative cars for years before they finally pull their fingers out and ditch the S2000

I suspect Lee's position is much the same as mine - not dissatisfaction with what we have, just the itch for something new. I couldn't make the numbers work to justify the change. If it's not an issue for Lee, I can certainly understand his reasons.
It's testament to the S2000 that you have to look at cars in the
Lee, reading in between the lines, you need something as lively as the S. Therefore I don't think the Cayman is a best fit. You're going to need something like a Noble, TVR, Elise.
Considering the amount of money you're talking about I would recommend either a large amount of s/h 911 (don't think the GT3's have dropped in price enough yet though) or go hardcore. You could upgrade the beater to something nice and spend less on a hardcore car.
