Default Drift car question

Been pondering this for a while now, why have most drift cars got rear spoilers ?. I was under the impression that rear spoilers gave you more downforce/grip at the rear. I would have thought thats the last thing you want if you want to drift. Or am i missing something............Any ideas.

Rob.

I'm guessing it gives the drifter something else they can tweak on the car to help archive the right amount of grip to drift their car.

Surely the whole point of a drift car is to slide the rear end and therefore to have the least traction above the wheels possible...........or am I missing something?

Thumbs up

It seems to be a question of balance, you still need traction and I guess this makes it more tuneable for entry/exit.

Yes you are missing something.

The whole idea of drifting is to impress the judges and to try to overtake your opponent when 'twinning'.

Now you impress the judges by corner entry speed, hitting apexes, drift angle and smoke.

On the basis of those criteria you are going to actually want a lot of grip.

remember, then engine is there to negate the grip - that's why these cars have 500bhp+

Bit if you have any experience of drifting, you'll know that as soon as you lift off the power you will want the grip to return for transition purposes.
