Driving in the rain
Front fogs are pretty dazzling in the rain because they glare off the road and they are not directed like headlights. Thus in a low slung car, I find front fogs particularly annoying especially on French cars which seem to have huge fogs that are permanently on and never angled correctly to prevent glare. Funnily enough, fog lights are pretty self explanatory when they should be used, heavy rain is not equal to fog.
I just have my lights on all the time, I think either people don't look very hard anymore or black cars are hard to see, either way, I am much more easily seen with my lights on, the same way as motorbikes are easier to see I guess. I don't get half as many people pulling out on me...

For sure, but people drive round with front fogs on all the time, whether it is raining/foggy or not. It has to be really heavy rain with a busy motorway to give you enough spray to get less than 100m visibility. It is a pretty rare occurrence, but people seem to insist on using fogs all the time, it is just dazzling and unnecessary.

The implication was that foglights should only be used in fog.
Glad you've seen the light.

But it is the spray that reduces the visibility not the heavy rain

Graham
Probably shouldn't but I put the rear fog light on, when some twat behind me is dazzling with their front fogs when there's no need - they get the picture pretty quickly and switch them off, then my rear is magically switched off soon after.

Rubbish, proper heavy rain will seriously reduce your visibility. The wipers just can't keep up.
Got caught in very heavy thunderstorm on my way down to London the other Friday night. Was on the A15, wipers on full blast, down to 15mph and thankfully traffic was keeping good braking distance. The car in front put his fog light on and I found it a huge help.
