Evo6 run
I had a run on an autocross course today in my buddy's Evo6 RS and was not too impressed. The boost must have been down or something but the famed turbo kick was not as big a deal as I expected.
Compared to the S on the same course, it felt heavier and way less precise. The course was too short and tight for either of these cars (85 seconds to complete 2 laps!), but I brought in a 3/10s better time in the evo over the S, mainly due to the boost advantage.
The S was much more fun to drive having to manage the rear end. It snapped around corners that the Evo understeered through. I felt the only way to go fast in the Evo was to press the straights but really nurse the corners to keep the terminal understeer under control.

I tested an Evo V before the S and was not impressed at all with the experience. Seemed fast but totally uneventful. Cornered well, but it just felt like a turbocharged saloon, not a sports car of any worth.
Engine note was dire.

i too was unimpressed, recently drove an EVO 8 FQ300 expecting to be blown away but tho it was fast it was pretty uninvolving and felt like i was driving a cheap saloon car with bucket seats....fast and able maybe but very little driver skill required in my opinion...
Had a drive of a TM Evo 6 and a standard Evo 6 and was impressed by them both, although not as involving as the S I did feel as though I had 300bhp under my right foot.
Had a go in an Evo 7 FQ300 and totally different, it felt like the car was doing the driving, a very detached driving experience.

It is quick, but it did not feel that much quicker compared to the S. On paper, it is quicker that it ought to be (not every 276hp car does a 4.6 sec 0-60! - torque + 4WD I guess) but the actual track results stock for stock do not seem to transfer in many cases.
Granted, on such a rubbish course proper comparisons can't really be done, but I would think it's low end turbo grunt is better suited to it that the S' top end kick.
I don't think I would ever trade in the S for an Evo. It is more a lateral move than an upwards move IMO. The driving experience in the VI did not compare to that of the S at any level.

Subaru - much more exciting drive than an EVO, but not as comptent a car (ecpect S202 and Spec C). Scoob has much more character mainly from the engine note and the way it delivers its power. The EVO is very linear and you rip through the gears, where the scoob gives you an almighty shove.
Was thinking about this today as im returning to turbo land soon. I think you drive the S, because you are always changing gear, always keeping it on the boil and it can bit you.
The Subaru etc is designed to get you from A to B as quickly as possible and does one hell of a job. The Spec C and FQ400 are as quick around most places as a top of the range Porsche, which I find to be very impressive. Its not trying to be an S, so its a bit odd to compare it - but they are very good at what they do.
