That's pretty disappointing. Taken from here the fastest lap was 8:12.

BMW F1 driver Nick Heidfeld made 3 demonstration laps on the old Nurburgring circuit in Germany.
The 23 kilometer variant was used: Nordschleife + GP Strecke: Mercedesarena/kurtzambindung (not the full GP track).

The fastest laptime was 8 minutes and 12 seconds (timed it with stopwatch), but note that this CANNOT be compared to the old records of Lauda and Bellof, the track is now a different length (1976: 22km, 1983: 20km).
Also did Heidfeld a few short stops on the track, for fotoshooting.
The car was modified with short gears, allowing only a topspeed of 275 km/h.
It also used Brigestone Demonstration tires, these "have no grip", according to Heidfeld (10 seconds slower on a 5km circuit than regular F1 tires).
I think this time is similar to the time Gan San did when he was testing the S2000 prototype in the Ring. I would love to see a F1 car in the ring.

Never the less, thanks for the link mate

8:12 for the Nordschleife plus most of the GP circuit. This apparently equates to a BTG time of around 6:55, which is faster than I can do it. And that Gan San vid was 8:30 ish BTG.

But obviously it was a demonstration run.

eh? gan-san was driving on a tourist day.. so the max length of the circuit was BTG.. so the shortest possible circuit..

we have no idea where heidfield was timed.. since he was running across onto the GP circuit also..

if you look at the speed heidfield was running through some of those corners.. it's another universe of speed..

Very cool, BMW have been doing some great prmotions lately with the F1 team, and I have a lot of time for Heidfeld. I wouldn't pay any attention to the times as it was clearly just a demo.

I'd love to see him go back and have a go at some proper quick laps, even if he ws only giving the car 7 or 8 tenths to ensure he didn't die.

Didn't know about that... Still, not as exciting as it could have been. In some occasions you can tell he is going really slow but 6:55 whilst stopping for pics is

I recon we may see him back there.

Judging by his performance at Goodwood I reconed he was going to be going for it. Sadly he didn't.

Maybe this was a 'tester' session to see how the setup worked on the track. There was no way BMW were going to get an F1 car on the track for testing and keep it quiet so, this way, free publicity, a good crowd to cheer the local boy on and some valuable data for a future assault on the 'ring....

It would be a major feather in BMW's cap to be able to proclaim 'fastest ever Nordschlife lap'.

Fingers crossed

6:55 is the same as the Radical SR8 ..

I've done a lap of both the F1 track and the 'Ring .. I was driving pretty hard and got about double his time.

Some of those corner speeds look damn impressive.
