It is a NATIONAL fingerprints database that PITO are extremely proud of. In fact, it is leading edge, there is no other Country that has something as versatile and powerful as this.
This is the sort of computer DBMS work that I think that I would enjoy doing (hence the interest in the system). Pity they don't pay as well as banks.

"The fingers you have used to dial are too fat. To obtain a special dialling wand, please mash the keypad with your palm ... now."

Over 20 Years in DBMS and 2 years in image processing (weapons systems, a long time ago).

I see it quoted in the paper tonight that this system has a 94-95% success rate

So over 1 in 20 results could be wrong

Not good.

I started writing my gut feelings regards this issue then realised there were already 3 pages of replies, so I read the rest first before replying

Yes Steven 1 in 20 wrong comparisons, that worries me too, so lets say you are Mr James Innocent and they scan your index finger. The database gets a possible (false) match with a Mr John Guilty and maybe also comes up with a possible second (false) positive for a Mr Harry Paedophile.

Ok so Plod now thinks he has cause for concern; are they going to pass other data back so they can identify obvious mistakes like Mr John Guilty being 6 ft 11in tall Irish Hunchback and Mr Harry Paedophile being a 4 ft 5in ethnic Chinese Dwarf...? When you are a 5ft 9in kilt wearing Scotsman

That would help a lot but there would still be lots of times where the extra info would not be definitive and you could expect a very unpleasant visit to the station for a few hours in the company of very suspicious Policemen while they try to sort it out.

Said visit to the station would also result in the taking of all your prints and definite subsequent inclusion in the database and the chance for all kinds of future special visits to your door at 4 o'clock in the morning by Plod as the result of further 1 in 20 errors..!.

I too am a database developer/programmer, some technologies I trust, this one I don't trust, at least not yet and I object on principle to being subjected to this kind of procedure anyway.

Just look at the Scots fingerprint scandal recently regards the Shirley McKie case...!
