Forgive me but you seem to be yo-yoing between every different type of bike around based on what your mates, colleagues, people on this forum say.
It'll be your bike so it has to be your choice.
There are umpteen different types of bike with many different engine capacities. In this month's Ride magazine they have the following categories in their buying and selling guide:
Big Sportsbikes
Sports 600s
Sports twins
Cruisers
Big Naked Bikes
Big Half Faired Street Bikes
Middleweight half-Faired Street Bikes
Naked Middleweights
Sports Tourers
Big Trailies
Supermoto
Tourers
and this isn't an exhaustive list.
All of them have different attributes.
If you don't see yourself doing anything other than short country lane blats then a Supermoto would be a lot of fun, but you would soon tire of it if you went continental mile munching. By the same token Cruising round on a Harley or similar is OK if it's just gentle relaxation you want, but useless if you want to ride an Alpine pass.
Think what sort of motorcycling you want to do, determine your budget, and a short list should come up without too much difficulty.
All of us who have commented are however agreed that full on Litre sportsbikes are probably not a good idea at this stage.

Supermotos are sharp handling bikes. Just look at the piccy of Esem's Duke and see the relative sharpness of the steering head angle.

Currently I'm not sure what bike I want !!!
As it stands the bike will be a toy that I will use on a weekend initially, no plans for touring the UK or Europe on but then who knows.
I now have loads of helpful advice from friends and especially from this thread. There are things that have been mentioned on here that I would have never considered and for that I am really grateful.
To summarise - yes it will be my choice but I always like to gather as much info as I can prior to making a decision - not only on a bike but with every purchase I make
