Chilled - I ran a Y reg one as the beater for approx 40k miles and it was only a 1.8L zetec and to be completley fair to it, it was brilliant at what it was designed to do - munch miles.

The handling is surprisingly good for the cars that they are, the engine was nippy and could happily sit at 90kph all day long.

Yes, the interiors are a lesson in blandness but when I handed mine in to trade at 85k miles there were only one or 2 niggles, a bit of a leak in the boot, the rear ash tray wouldn't stay in and the air con never worked but that was due to a stone in the condensor and the replacement fee was upwards of

Sounds like a mundano is the right choice for me. I just want a moterway muncher with an auto box to make the journey easy.

I have a W202 (C CLass) Merc as a beater and its fantastic. I've never been particularly interested in Mercs but if you want something to eat miles in comfort, without any drama or failures then I'd strongly recommend one.

I too looked at Mondeos as they were plentiful but couldn't walk away from the Merc as its in a different league.

Make sure its an auto though.....

Just a thought

it'll be too much to buy, and too much to repair. I did look at them, but the age it'd need to be, it was a touch too old.

Friend of mine recently got rid of the turbo diesel Ghia (about six years old)

He had lots of problems with it (no single huge one but an accumulation of things that repeatedly too the car off the road, so very irritating). I can find out details if you want

I've owned a few and rate them as beaters - my choice would be a 2.0 petrol for that role

Higher spec makes it all a bit more pleasant

Ghia with cows is the one to get.

Anything less just looks/smells like a minicab, even if you don't smoke in it.
