Toto is no idiot and he said something on C4's coverage just after Rosberg clinched the title that got me thinking.

Regarding his precious rules of engagement for the drivers he said something along the lines of altering them for 2017 or even shredding them entirely.
I don't think that was a throw away comment.

So here's my tin foil hat theory....

They know that the Red Bulls are going to be serious competition next season and I also reckon they knew in advance that Nico was leaving.
They'll get an inexperienced number 2 driver and let Hamilton be outright number 1 to fight the Bulls.

No. If they get a junior Number Two, Hamilton will hold all the cards and Merc might not win the Constructors. They need someone who can come in and win immediately.

I agree with that, they've shown how much they care about getting P1 and P2 all the time

Bottas ?

Toto is also a stakeholder at Williams IIRC.

Is a possibility Is Bottas good enough? I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he's been lulling a bit this year as his car hasn't been what it was the last two seasons. I can't help think that this would be the ideal time for Hulkenberg, obviously, he's got a Renault deal but I'm willing to bet that he isn't getting paid an awful lot and thus the buyout would be cheap.

I predict Wehrlein to be Hamiltons team mate.

In all the speculation about who takes over the Rosberg seat there has been next to nothing about why he quit.

My theory is that after half a lifetime - since age 15 - scrapping with Hamilton and coming second virtually every time, getting a (engine) break after all this time to finish as no 1 Rosberg has quit while he is (only just) ahead. He can't face another season of scrapping, with the probability that Hamilton can't have as bad a season with starts, mech problems etc. Rosberg might get a bit stir crazy in a few months time and I wouldn't rule out a return at some point when the dust has settled - maybe after Mad Max has fried the Hamilton cojones for breakfast a few times and Lewis has spat the dummy once too often for Mercedes team management.

Has anyone else been able to say that they were never beaten as world champion?
