Mansell went to Indycars (won the title, but certainly got beaten a time or two) and then made a very ill-fated F1comeback with McLaren....getting beaten some more.

My theory is that after half a lifetime - since age 15 - scrapping with Hamilton and coming second virtually every time, getting a (engine) break after all this time to finish as no 1 Rosberg has quit while he is (only just) ahead. He can't face another season of scrapping, with the probability that Hamilton can't have as bad a season with starts, mech problems etc. Rosberg might get a bit stir crazy in a few months time and I wouldn't rule out a return at some point when the dust has settled - maybe after Mad Max has fried the Hamilton cojones for breakfast a few times and Lewis has spat the dummy once too often for Mercedes team management.

Has anyone else been able to say that they were never beaten as world champion?
Possibly.

But Rosberg's 31, has an 18 month old child, appears to be devoted to his wife, and as he more than likely has enough cash to enjoy a few very comfortable lifetimes, it's a rational course of action. I would very likely do the same in his position.

Add onto those points the amount of criticism he's picked up (I'm not arguing justified or not just that he's getting it) and he must be thinking there are far more down sides to staying than up sides
A nice pundit job with occasional visits to Le Mans or similar when he gets a racing itch he needs to scratch.
I don't blame him for walking at all.

Conspiracy theory No1
Mercedes now have finally achieved a long held dream of having a 'German' World Champion.... even though his roots are Scandinavian and he rarely sets foot in Germany.... oh and the Germans dislike him.
Over recent years, I have suspected more than a little 'pit lane input' during critical stages of race/season with regard systems control from the Mercedes Team leadership.
Nico would never win a second championship.

Next year they have to have 2 front-liners as it's going to be pretty competitive (we hope!)

Merc 2017..... Hulk.
Good circuit knowledge, experienced, hard racing, probably pliant from a management point of view, and probably available at a bargain price.

I'm just waiting to see what Jensen has got planned for the World Rallycross Championship.

Although the ink hasn't dried yet on Hulkenberg's 3-year Renault contract.

People seem to be back-tracking on the possibility of Wehrlein going to Mercedes. If he's out of the frame, then there must be a lot of lawyers looking at a lot of contracts right now.

Toto has gone on record (Sky F1, special Rosberg program to be broadcast Thursday evening) stating they are looking at Fred.

At the end of the day it simply comes down to the driver having the desire to jump teams and then the two teams agreeing a price.

Hamilton's been on the record several times stating that he doesn't care who his team mate is so long as they get equal treatment.

Whether that's the truth or not is entirely a different matter.
