Default Garage 2nd and 3rd opinions!

Had my car serviced at the local indy last month, pretty reasonable 350 quid. Anyway while I was there they said I needed new top mounts and front and rear wishbones and a geo and they would do it for 2000 quid so I booked it in. After a few days I cancelled as I wanted to have another opinion. I mailed another Porsche Indy and advised what I needed they quoted me 1400 quid for same thing. I then thought right lets try another, so I drove to Autofarm this morning in Oxford to let them view car.

Up on ramps, top mounts are perfect don't need changing, rear wishbones are good. He said out of 10 if 10 was they needed changing he would give them a 2, they will last at least another 2 years. Fronts need doing though. 380 for parts and 90 mins to fit both so as they charge 60 quid an hour labour will do it all for under 500 quid. So booked in next Satuday .

It pays to shop around it seems!!!!!!

You're right there.

Tell you what, try soaking those perishing rubber bushes in silicone and rubber lubricant. I do it on the Hondas (Civic's trailing arm bushes are prone to the samet thing) and it seems to rejuvenate them quite a bit -like the L'Oreal advert! No reason why it shouldn't get you a good couple of years, or more!

doesn't surprise me in the slightest

the recession is really biting now and many businesses and individuals are right on the edge

not difficult to see why garages won't try and sting people

although the other side of the coin is people skimping on maintenance

a garage owning friend of mine has noted a dramatic increase in the number of catastrophic engine failures

all down to a lack of maintenance - particularly people delaying cambelt changes

I've evdience of the same; the indies are getting a better class of customer down from the dealers, whilst the cheapskates have abandoned them, not getting their vehicles maintained at all. Not a bad result.

There are also fewer grunting mouthbreathers in restaurants than there used to be!
