I think the reason of banning them wasn't aesthetics. They were banned because they were said to block the drivers' visibility... At least that's what the local commentator said...

 

Yes, but that was clearly an excuse. Nobody wants to see F1 cars looking like that.

As for the mass damper thingy, they banned it on aerodynamic grounds which is clearly nonsense, and that's why Renault got the stewards to overrule the FIA originally by arguing that they could improve the aerodynamics more by fitting stiffer dampers which are completely legal.

It also sounds like something that could genuinely filter down to improve safety of road cars (i.e. more grip over bumpy surfaces), so it's a real shame that they felt the need to ban a technical innovation - and presumably a relatively cheap technical innovation too.

 

Far be it for me to suggest that the dampers have been outlawed in the interests of penalising a certain team that has been using them to good effect and in doing so creating a nail biting finish to what has become a completely boring experience.

 

Wasn't just Renault who were effected, Ferrarri & a.n.other were too.

Shows what adifference it made to the Renault mind....
