Who said that about the 34 GTR? Must have been some journo. It's not meant to be a "sports car"

It was more a case of lots of people saying no one will buy Ferrari's and Porsche's when you could have a R34 for less money and still be as fast, sound familiar?

My main criticism of the GTR is it's hugely heavy and exceeds my self-imposed 1.5 tonne mass limit by some considerable margin.

This is the most shocking photo I have seen for some time and is to my mind further evidence that modern cars are too big (and too heavy).

Nick.....I strongly suspect the new Acura thinggie will significantly bust your (admirable) 1.5 tonne limit.

Saw it on TG last night. I quite liked it, and it looked a lot of fun. I wouldn't say no to one, especially at that price.

However, aside from the nostalgia value, I am struggling to find the appeal of the MG Midget.

To my mind I have always found them not particularly pretty (although this is obviously a subjective view), cramped, slow, badly built, unentertaining in the handling department and generally boring.

I owned one very briefly in the 80's and have therefore based my opinion on my experience.

I can see the appeal of the later MGB GT which is a very pretty and essentially very different car and can be relatively entertaining, especially in V8 form.
cheap, cheap, cheap in every respect plus fun, benign handling, depreciation proof now if maintained, anyone can work on one, parts easy to get, rwd, economical, easy to modify, huge enthusiast backup, does not attract malice from other road users or the vandal community, DIY servicing, tax exempt pre 1973, peanuts insurance, etc etc.

looks are always subjective and a debate on the subject rarely leads to a a reconciliation of differing opinions. I'm about 6' and don't find them too cramped, but then I am not fat. they are slow by modern standards, as are any number of other classics. they do not FEEL slow when driven briskly, which is part of the appeal. I think they are highly entertaining in the handling department. they are no more badly built than any other car from that price range and era and all the 'faults' are fixable at low cost, with the exception of major bodywork.

I don't know if you owned a rubber bumpered model? if you did, it might explain why you didn't like driving them. it is a pale imitation of the best model in the range - the 1275cc model.

the MGB and its various derivatives is a completely different animal.

the GTR is a big GT car, it's not meant to be like the NSX (a sales flop btw) despite the 911 turbo pace target.

in fairness i'm not really sure what the target market is, i've not looked at prices (i'm not rich and I'm not buying a new car until my mortgage is done with).. M3/sports merc maybe?

whatever it is it's a rare feat of engineering and will attract a small number of buyers on that basis. It'll be big in Japan just like Corvettes are big in the US and Mondeo's TDCis are big over here
