Default Help with resetting an a3 airbag

My father broke his leg about 12 weeks ago quite badly and had it put in a cast that went all the way up to his thigh. The upshot of this was that he couldn't get in a car because he couldn't bend his knee or ankle. So we took the front passenger seat out of his A3, and he could sit in the back seat with his leg where the front seat was.

Totally out of the blue, he died suddenly on sunday morning from complications relating to the broken leg.

My mother wants his car put back to how it was to take away some of the reminders of the broken leg so i've put the seat back in the car and reconnected all the plugs but the airbag light won't go out (it was on when the seat was out).

Does anyone know of a way to reset the airbag without taking the car to a VAG dealer? That is something that we could really do without at the moment.

i've done a bit of searching on the net but can't find anything other to say to take the car to a dealer. I know a few people on here have or had S3's etc so i'd be very grateful for any help.

Christ, sorry to hear that news mate

I don't have the answer to your problem, but could look in the S2000 manual to see if there is a generic solution? It might be a simple as removing/replacing a relay or fuse, but I expect you've tried that

or more than willing to go into the local VAG dealership and try and blag the info (might need a chassis number)

let me know

Friend of mine works in Reading Audi (might remember my thread about the A8) - I'll give him a bell.

Sorry to hear that. Terrible news.

At a guess (and that's all it is) it'll be an error code set in the ECU, probably need a dealer to reset it, or find someone with a copy of the VAG-COM software (plugs into the car under the dash and allows you to read and reset error codes from a laptop).

Just got off the phone and it's exactly what Mark says. It doesn't necessarily indiciate a current fault but that a fault has been detected and logged (ie the seat was disconnected). Chances are it'll take seconds just to turn off the light but it does require either a visit to a technician or at least someone with the necessary kit.

Thanks for all the comments above. They are appreciated.

Graham, thanks for speaking to your friend. Could i ask you to ask him another question for me? I have read somewhere that if the light is illuminated then none of the airbags work. If this is the case then i'll need to get it to the dealer sooner rather than later, but if not, then its just something we'll have to ignore for the next few weeks.

I can't get hold of him at the moment, think he's out to lunch.

However, he's not a tech, but a Sales Manager. I'd trust his answer that I gave above, but for something as potentially dangerous as your more specific question I think I'd be more comfortable if a tech or service manager was asked to be honest.

First time I've read this, can't offer any technical help but just wanted to add that I'm really sorry to hear of your loss.

Based on all the comments so far on this thread, it's safe to say our thoughts are with you
