How Easy Should it be
A guy I work with has just exploited a certain website which has enabled him to find out chassis numbers, dates of registration, transfer dates (to new keepers), whether it's been recorded stolen or crashed, and other such information. All this using your reg number.
I won't go into detail how, but surely it shouldn't be this easy.
What information about a vehicle can you legally acquire from the DVLA, if any?
Has he discovered a strange way of flouting the law?

Yep. This is assuming you can get close enough to the car to get this information. No need to using this method. Anyone who's posted a photo on here without blanking the number plate, I can get your details.

What I'm asking is, should it be possible to obtain this information so easily without paying, without registering my details anywhere, and without revealing any of my personal information at all?

That must be something that involves a direct computer link or shipment of a database (with regular updates).
Cos you or I can simply phone up the DVLA, give them a reg, say it's been abandoned on private ground (as council deals with abandoned cars on public land) and they'll give you the registered keeper's name and address.
Did it twice a few years ago to to write to non-residents parking in my block's car park.
