Default i8 vs. NSX

Another glowing review of the BMW i8 has been posted by Steve Sutcliffe.

I can't help but wonder if BMW have beaten Honda at their own game and the 'new' NSX is too little, too late...

Not sure on the power specs of the nsx but it appears honda have aimed that more towards the petrol head, with the v6 engine. BMW appear to be going more for the poser.

IMO a 3cyl turbo engine has no place in a sports car and 350bhp ish is nowhere near what it should have. I'd have a m5, m3,m4 etc over one all day.
Not sure why anyone would spend £95k on a economical sports car

Precisely - It's like comparing a Lancia Montecarlo to a 308GTB. Or an Insight to an Audi R8.

A glowing hack report on a BMW, eh? So, what else is new...

Is it sub £100k ?

(In BMW parlance, that's £80k for the car, 5k for wheels, 5k for paint, and 10k for indicators, which still aren't standard)

I am sure the i8 has some clever stuff going on under the skin, but I was astounded by how huge it is.

The jury is still out on the new NSX (to be more accurate, they haven even started their deliberations) but it is going to be a very different car to the i8, using electricity in a very different way and as such, I don't think there is really any comparison.

Exactly - it's a form of SH-AWD that will give the car almost hypercar-performance, at a fraction of the price.

That's once it works & doesn't WOT the car into the trees...

Cant comment on these two but saw a new M5 yesterday, it has absolutely massive brakes.. The rears are huge. Now i'm no expert but that seems to suggest it weighs 4x4 money and the unsprung weight of those babies cant be good. They werent composite.

Oh and it was £75k!

An F40 batted past while i was waiting with nipper for dorris to test a 120D.. That had presence worthy of £75k . Or the F440 which drooled by too.

A fast car isnt a supercar in my book

I have posted before about the aesthetic but, IMHO, the new NSX posseses far too much Audi DNA in its styling ,and dare I say it, looks a tad boring . The i8 is at least visually dramatic and by most accepted standards, this is a key qualification for a 'hyper-car'.

Honda are still pissing-about with the NSX and whilst, from a petrol-head perspective, I too hope it is a success, I suspect it will suffer the same commercial fate as it's illustrious predecessor.

And in the UK the NSX is doomed to failure with the existing dealer network; no matter how good the car, why would any sane punter shelling-out £100 - £120K on a car buy it from a distribution network struggling to sell - and maintain - the automotive equivalent of cold, grey porridge?

True, although longer term (2017), the showroom should look very different;

Very fast CTR, S1000, S1500, NSX-Lite, full-fat NSX.

The Jazz, HR-V, Civic, CR-V & possibly Accord will merely be there to fill the space.

Also, the NSX might look better in the metal; Honduras traditionally are unphotogenic, but the designs age very well.
