Just checked the DVLA website and there are no restrictions on the physical size of the plates ... so I can cut them down in size and they will remain legal.

Quick word, you will need proof of id and ownership of vehicle to get plates made now.
Not if you buy them on ebay

Just ordered a pair.

You only need that if you want the plates with BS stamp and kitemark IIRC.

I used Premier plates - you get a few options & don't need to have all that postcode b ollocks on the bottom. They make 'em up tidy too.

There does have to be an amount (11mm springs to mind) of border around the letters though.

Dan was correct, it is 11mm.

Still means I can take a couple of inches off each end and a few mm off top and bottom and it will remain legal... and get me through my MOT.

To be honest, if I had known that it couldn't be read with ANPR I would have changed it.

ANPR is the way forward .... apparently .... and only works with suitable enforcement ... which is why people get hammered for minor abuses ...

Pity there isn't something like that for faces.

Since it's 20% of scrotes that cause plod 80% of aggro, it'd be very useful. Especially with a 'sniper' function...
