Default Insurance query

A while ago, someone drove in to my parked car and drove off. I managed to get their details, went through insurance and had all the costs for repair recovered from their insurance.
I got my renewal quote through today, giving me 2 years NCB when I should have 4. They obviously have removed 2 years NCB as a result of this incident. Now, before I phone Tesco up to cancel the renewal I just wondered if anyone knows how they work this out and if what they have done is indeed acceptable.
What I don't understand is, if they recovered all costs from the third party why should I be penalised when renewing my insurance?

As far as I understand it your NCB will be reduced whilst the claim is still outstanding

Once it is settled and the monies recovered by your insurer then the full entitlement to your NCB will be reinstated

Doesn't seem fair I know

Your car was hit whilst parked wasn't it ?

At least that's how it used to work

Claim has been completed AFAIK. Yes, car was parked.

I'd check with your insurer pip

See where the claim is up to in relation to your insurer recovering their costs from the third party

If the claim is settled then there is no reason to reduce your NCB

It may just be a timing thing.

As Greg states, once they have settled the claim with the other parties insurance company you should get your full NCB re-instated (note that now I've agreed, he may well suggest that this is bollocks! )

I'd give them a call and hopefully they will be able to resolve this quickly.

It will not stop them uping your premium though. One of the great pissers of the insurance world is that once you've been involved in an accident, regardless of fault, you are more likely to be involved in another... or at least that is what the insurance companies will have us beleive.

They may just be trying it on hoping you'd pay up regardless.

My Mrs has an incident with a push bike a few years back. Her fault for pulling out on him and we sorted out his bike repair bill directly.

We also informed the insurance company who then cancelled Ceri's NCB for what I think was a couple of years, the point at which the other party could no longer take any personal injury action. At that point we got a refund to allow for the full NCB we previously had.

I don't think this will relate to your case, but you never know!

I had a similar issue several years ago. Hit while stationary and lost no claims for 12 months. Something about the other party being able to claim for upto 1 year after an accident. 100% their fault but still had to wait to get ncb re instated. Real PITA
