Insuring Two cars with an overlap
Hi Guys,
I suspect a few of you have had to attend top this before, can you advise please?
I have a lease car due for return in mid April. I can get this brought forward a little.
I have also secured a second car for work but to get a top deal have to take it before the end of February, and this is scheduled now.
The original car is about 4m through a regular, single vehicle insurance policy (not multi car)with Tesco.
So I need to insure the new car for the foreseeable, cancelling the original in a couple of weeks (at most two months)
There's a lot of arguing on the 'net about NCD on two cars, but what is apparent is that insurance companies are sharing some NCB status data here.
Quite a few people used an older proof of NCD on a new second car policy, only for the new insurer to inform them its invalid, so they must know somehow.
Anyhow.... that's that idea off the table then.
Is it possible to MOVE my long NCB to the NEW CAR policy, and take a hit on the short bit left on the existing car?
Or is it likely to be easier to cancel it (£30) and take a new one with both cars on right now, cancelling the original leased car when it goes back in a few weeks?
My concern is how the NCB is handled.
What I REALLY DONT WANT is to end up stuck with some kind of 'pseudo' NCB on my new car that ties me to Tesco or whoever (Like Admiral et al do).
Any thoughts?
Steve

A lot of insurance companies will mirror your NCD on your second car or at least give you some sort of initial discount for your first year.
I found that insuring 2 cars they didn't pay much attention to the NCD and were more interested in beating the competition as long as your main policy has 9+ years. as when I mentioned I had NCD on the second car as I have 2 policies it made no difference to the price. But that could have been down to needing specialist cover for both my cars as they are slightly modified.
Your best bet is just to ring round the companies and play them off each other until you get the best price, explain your situation and explain the end goal of transferring your main policy to your main car when your other car goes.
Who you ring around depends greatly on the type of car you have, I have a modified Japanese grey import and a modified s2000 and found that Aplan, Paceward and Sky were the best for mine but if you have something other than a Japanese car maybe they won't be competitive.

I have my NCD on my S2000 which is my daily drive 18k a year business use, no accidents or points etc etc. £450 with my no claims on it.
I still have my 350z and just took another policy with limited mileage and no NCD, £350 for a years policy, so will cancel it when I sell it and get some kind of refund

My insurer (broker chris knott, underwriter highway) allow me to insure another car on the same policy for up to 4 weeks.
I did this last year when we bought my wife a new car without having sold the old one. Once the old car was sold the new car was put onto the original policy using the original NCD etc.
As my car is also insured with the same broker, we could get 8 weeks worth of cover using both my policy and my wife's if necessary.
Would be worth a chat with your insurer.

I took your advice and did something similar just now, thank you.
Wanted a few ideas in case I was missing a trick or two.
Tesco were actually quite good here - I got the NCD onto the new BMW to start in two weeks for the remaining duration of the policy.
The current Merc they have added back on with short term cover for up to 28days which is sufficient for me to get it picked up early.
Cost including their admin charge was £35.
Darts!
The situation here was an unmissable (to me) deal on a pre-reg 4 series with exactly my chosen spec and amazing price and local to boot.
The E class has been excellent, cant fault it at all, and its on excess miles already and the tyres are on 2mm all over so makes sense to dump it a few weeks early
Cheers,
Steve

Nope it's just my workhorse.
Just got the decree absolute last Friday so onwards and upwards, but my days of running three cars are long gone
BMW 420d M-Sport Gran Coupe in Estoril Blue, Pro Nav and lots of toys.
My best quote on new business (basic policy) for 25k miles and class 1 business use was £245 for two of us.

You okay?
