I've missed something....
don't the people who get stuck on the right "feel they are justified" to stay there because they are sitting just on the speed limit and protecting the queens highway from potential speedsters? If the speed limit was unlimited as some of the autobahns are then they can relieve themselves of this responsibility and get where they belong. Germany might have unlimited speed limits on some parts of the motorway - but at difficult intersections they rapidly drop the limit to 100km/h - and everybody who was doing 200+ slows down and respects that limit,. driving past a school and it's less than 40km/h. This to me seems to make practical sense - the number of high speed accidents are relatively small to the number of high street pedestrian hits - and anything much above 30mph is usually fatal for pedestrian.
Absolutely right! I find driving in Germany a joy. Lane discipline in general is excellent and, if you have car that will storm down past in lane 3 the general consensus seems to be "Fair play, matey!" as opposed to here where if you overtake someone else it's "Wanker!"
In Germany, there is another reason to keep to the slow lane. which fortunately we do not have here, This is the Geistfahrer (ghost driver), confused, drunk or a youth on a dare, who take the wrong turning on the slip road and drive down the wrong carriageway. Fortunately they keep to the right, they may be confused, but they're still German
, which puts them in the fast line
The public radio system there has operated a RDS type traffic news system for years. They report ghost drivers as soon as the police become aware of one, so the kids can go for miles without hitting anyone.
It would never be the same here, as one would never know which lane to avoid. Still, it could reduce the number of center lane hogs

SEE! even you're doing it! What "slow lane"? How can we ever hope to overcome this problem when even one of the country's finest motorists calls it that?
People just don't like to be classed as "slow" drivers, so they don't use Lane 1 (that's my theory anyway)Anyway, Rob's story reminds me of the old lady who hears a radio report that some nut is driving the wrong way on the M6 past Birmingham City Centre. Knowing that her husband is in that area, she phones his mobile. "WHAT!?" he screams impatiently down the phone. "Maurie, it's Ruth. Please take care, apparently a nutcase driver is travelling the wrong way down the motorway near where you are." "A nutcase?!" yells Maurie, "A nutcase?!... There's hundreds of 'em!"
