Ironically enough, she'd probably be quite happy with that, Craig. It's me that would prefer a newer car (which isn't going to need work every time it comes up to MOT) and one that is as safe as we can make it for Charlotte in the back.

I do hope that that is AS WELL as the M5, rather than instead of!

(Greater love hath no man than to sell his sports car for something more baby-friendly :sniff: )

My Punto is leased. Worked out cheaper than the depreciation over the term.
How did you see into the future?

A car lease is a contract that removes some of the risk of ownership - first and foremost the risk from depreciation, secondly (if included) the risk of consumables.

You pay a premium for that risk - simple as that.

I shook my magic beans. Well a 3yr old Fiat isn't actually going to be owrth much is it Especially after I've used and abused it for 3 years.

By the way LL it was a joke about the Picasso, there are some cars a man should never own or drive.

One really has to admire BMW for their skill in manipulating that, as well as using the chocolate box six/eight pots' abilities & image to sell the vin ordinaire four-bangers.

They've applied a similar magic across the range, including Mini.

It's no surprise they're so popular.

Whilst I'd agree in principle with this, sometimes the lease rates are determined by the need to clear stock. Ling's website is showing a CLK for a good discount, since they need to make roon for the E-coupe.

Arguably, one could equally walk in with cash and batter a dealer over the head with it until he relents, but it's easier just to see a headline 'cheap lease' for most people.

When Ford first released the Sharalaxy, mate of mine got a ridiculous 2-year deal for the missus, since Ford was trying to 'buy' itself a new market segment back then.

We started off looking at second-hand Minis, but based on just buying for cash.

But personally I think they're ten-a-penny so I started thinking a bit laterally. I think I'd prefer an Alfa MiTo on the basis that it's aimed at the same sort of market but is a bit different. I've always had a soft spot for Alfas but have never been brave enough in the past to actually consider buying one! Since they're newer, there's no scope to buy used and make any meaningful saving so I looked at leasing instead.

Anecdotally, residuals seem pretty strong and are forecast to remain buoyant (by third parties, not just Alfa dealers ). Shock horror - Alfa in potential decent residual value shocker I remain to be convinced but it's at least worth thinking about.

Mini residuals are strong - a touch less than 50% after 3 years, so maybe I'll have to do a compare and contrast before SWMBO makes her mind up.
Mark, the best way to go into leasing is to buy the deal, not the car.

There are always deals out there, but not necessarily on the car you want, so to make it work best you look for what's giving good residuals and low monthly payments (not always the 'bottom of the range' stuff either at the moment, everyone's economising so bigger engined stuff suffers).

Ling's cars, although hard on the eyes is actually a good site to use, she's as honest as the day is long, even if her style is a bit of an acquired taste.....
