Default Lotus Elise

Considering one of these and I know bugger all about them

It will be a series 2, budget around £16k

I appreciate it isn't exactly a practical car but it will cover a low mileage and enjoyment is the key. I don't like headaches though and it will need to be reliable

I've seen an Elise S Touring advertised, 07 with 2k miles, asking price £16,995

Any advice on specs, common faults, what they are like to live with, etc would be appreciated

Calling an elise "Touring" is a misnomer.

I saw a Series 2 with 51k miles on it and rough paintwork going for £5k on pistonheads.

If you don't want bother get one with a Toyota engine. 111Rs should be within budget now and perhaps the perfect Elise.

Being hand-made in a shed they will always be niggly cars though

Learn how to get in and out with dignity before arriving anywhere...there is a nack to it. (Although mine was an S1 and they were always an arse to get out of).

The seats are like being punched in the spine repeatedly with a brick.

Thanks, the 1.6 is a Toyota engine. Only 134 BHP, 0-60 in around 6 secs but handling and fun is what these cars are about I suppose.

Cheap tax too which makes a change from my 09 S2000 (now departed and I'm without a daily car)

Gad, thanks for the offer of the buyers guide, I've found quite a few on the interweb. Not many serious issues from what I can see (not much to go wrong). Tracked cars and accident damage to be avoided.

Touring...

Not with a female.

I went away to work for a few weeks and had to take the passenger seat out to get my clothes and stuff in as the boot was taken up by my laptop bag...
