M3s are fast
if I get a chance in the next few days, I'll do a couple of timed circuits of my own 'private circuit'
one in the S, one in the M5 - no other cars around, both in the dry, etc etc
I think people will be shocked at the difference
maybe I will, but we'll see

I'd take the bet, IF I knew the circuit
Sorry, but not even the greatest driver in the world can compensate for SUCH inferior machinery, road/track knowledge being equal
Nothing much to do with my abilities
All about the machinery
I did see 'that German bint'
and whilst she did indeed pass many people who either
couldn't drive at all/lacked confidence/lacked circuit knowledge
she also failed to crack 10 minutes
which is a time plenty of people on here have beaten
just to keep things in perspective

I bet even after 20-30 laps you'd still have soot on your bonnet.....

It was only a couple of seconds over... and it was probably due to the fireblades and some old geezers in their M5's holding her up.

Point I wasn't really trying to drive home was the driver and knowledge counts for sooooo much on a track like this.
Also RE Test drive: Wouldn't expect the same driver in his S2000 then his M5 to expect anything different.

the only way to do it, where the only difference is the car
wish I could get hold of a Pulsar though.....to set a benchmark

Everyone acknowledges that there isn't a post 2000 M car that the S2000 can touch. They all have superior straightline speed and in most cases higher cornering speed.
Having said that, your test will prove nothing. Maybe your test track is a 1 mile oval
- Maybe its a really twisty one where you can only use 1/2/3 gears. If the test was carried out by Best Motoring it would be a little more interesting...
I've driven a LOT of E46 M3s due to my job. I'd say it is comfortably quicker than an S, but not destructively so.
As they say on the M3 thread, the power-to-weight ratio gap between the two cars is not that big (about 30bhp per ton).
The CSL is definitely the M3 to have. Convertibles aren't that bad (they have more torsional rigidity than the E36 M3 Coupe) but they are heavy and about equal to the S performance-wise.
S54 six-cylinder engine sounds great. I'm considering buying one myself, but not because I think it would represent a VAST step up in performance. An E60 M5 is a vast step up in performance. An M3 is not, but it is quicker than the S2000.
Still love the Honda though.
