Mobile cranes at rush hour
Just got back from the pub at lunch. The beer has swayed me into having a rant about bl00dy mobile cranes.
You know, the ones that travel down the motorway doing 30 - wheels the size of a small planet. What gets my goat though is that they always travel at rush hour. I saw 5 on the M3/M27 over a 20 minute period on my way in to work this morning. And what's doubly annoying is that you see two identical vehicles travelling opposite ways down the road. Why don't the ba5tards hire the thing from their local depot.

In Stafford we have a company called Alstom, they produce huge turbine generators.
These turbine generators require a truck the size of a supertanker to transport it to it's destination. The truck has 2 cabs and about 20,000 wheels, it really is HUGE.
Guess when the decide to ship out the goods to customers.......yes you guessed it during peak traffic times. Once the thing gets to the M6 it's another nightmare for motorway commuters as the truck occupies 2 lanes and travels at about 10 mph maximum.
Is it too much to ask to have these things moved during the nightly hours

Pete,

1) No, I'm in the Prelude
, and I walked to and from the pub, and won't be driving for another hour, so I hope that 4 hours is enough to get it out of my system
. I'm definitely an anti-drink drive person.
2) Ever heard of an overnight/rush hour stay in a layby ? Although I'm not sure there will be many big enough for Andy's 20,000 wheel trucks

Try to hire a dam crane the cost is alarming just for a normal day lift , hence out of hours is only entered into after careful consideration . I believe some of the firms actually give route's to drivers to minimise disruption and this often use's the m/way's.
Any way the M25 is usually doing less than the speed of a crane during rush hour so a few cranes won't make any difference?
The cranes were most probably installing mobile phone masts and S2000 drivers never use mobile phones do we?
