Not that it seemed necessary today, but say i wanted to have the engine and box rebuilt, what sort of money would i be looking at?I'm already upping the restoration budget!
Nice car, should make a nice first project.
As for engine rebuild, it really depends on how much you want to spend (doesn't everything). The best way to approach it is ti decide if you want a rebuild which simply refreshes the engine back to original spec, or you want to strengthen it either for more performance, or simply to address any known weak points.
Then, go to an engine builder with an idea of your budget and have a chat, any decent one will understand what you want and try to work to any reasonable budget you give them - I would say

Nice car!
I was in the middle of building my crx sir track car. Had the engine rebuilt and added ek9 cams and valve train, port polish, gearbox rebuilt, new raxle driveshafts, poly bushes, etc... But unfortunately I've ran into some electrical problems, so may sell of all the bits.
Mark's pretty spot on with the pricing.

If you mean Paul's it's a D16 (non VTEC)
IIRC, the bonnet bulge was associated with the twin-cam belt of the B16, so maybe it's been swapped at sometime?

So he does describe it!

Also as shown above with the OP VTEC model with no bonnet bulge.

Simon is correct, no surprise there
The 1.6i-16 (D16) had the small bonnet bulge, with the centre section of the bonnet dipping
The 1.6i-VT (B16) actually has the entire centre section of the bonnet raised.

Well farq me, missus! You learn something new every day.
Makes sense, given the D16's got an awfully long stoke (75 x 90 IIRC) and the B16's got a wide head with a much better valve angle.

As far as the engines concerned i just want everything to look as new as possible. As it stands at the moment,it's clearly the engine bay of a 16 year old car and looks pretty tatty.(it still goes tremendously though). The first job though will be fitting the new coilovers, discs, pads and cleaning up the calipers,i've never done ANY work on cars and i'm not sure how hard a job this is.It's going to be a steep learning curve i'd imagine!
