Wrong.

CSL is a normal M3 manual gearbox with a bunch of hydraulics activating the gearbox.

Having driven the CSL in anger around the ring, having the paddles move with the wheel is definitely a good thing. It only becomes an issue during drifting. But the gearbox won't let you downshift too much and overrev the engine.

It's a pain in the car park, but then again it does have a shift knob in the normal place that you can use. Which I'd probably get used to in not much time at all.
What was wrong about the post you quoted?

M3 CSL is BMW, not Porker/Merc unless i'm missing something....

The 993 tiptronic is the worst gearbox I've ever had the misfortune to use.
It was exactly the kind of hype I despise; paddle-shifters on a regular ZF slushbox so that fat, balding Porsche-buyers could have Walter Mitty-style F1 purchase justification fantasies, instead of admitting they just wanted a lazy slushbox. The semi automatic of the old 911T was more innovative. And the PDK really was the way forward.

The BMW-style automated manual was tried back in the 1950s by Borgward, but the control system was a bit cumbersome back then. It has subsequently been used to equally bad effect by the likes of Alfa and Honda etc.

The DSG is a clever refinement and once it loses weight and the hideously expensive wet clutches, it ought to be good.

GTR for me is proof of the old addage 'more is less'. In the GTR's case, a LOT less.
What a monster of a thing. That front end is definately very cyberman-esque!
Only DSG I've had was on a 3.2TT I bought new in March 04. I really did NOT like that box - too much shunt and occasionally/infuriatingly a mind of its own (particularly when (not!) in reverse!!). Maybe the newer gen ones are rather better. I really do need to try BMW's go at it in the E92 M3.

I had a bit of a play with a GTR last week. Went from 60 to xxxmph and it totally pi**ed all over me.
I got to have a good rummage around in one at the Scottish motor show.
Very nice and VERY big

I'm inclined to agree - but one helluva car if one needs something that big.

And a towering achievement, even with the ludicrous running costs.

Ultimately, think I'd prefer an Imprevo, personally.

We had a look in the gtr at knockhill recently, the wife thought it was very nice, but a bit tacky inside due to the plastics and stereo. She then decided it would not fit in the garage, was too expensive and she didn't want too wait till 2011 for a delivery date- although I wasn't aware the waiting list was that long- so we'll just have to get something else.

I understand there may be a couple in Edinburgh available, but I am not 100% about it. If anyone's interested, it may be worth a call. www.alexfnoble.co.uk
