Nissan Note
I've got one today as a hire car. It's not that bad actually. The brakes are really good, the gearbox is good, the engine is a bit gutless but good enough for that sort of car. And I've discovered that if you brake and turn tight downhill it oversteers quite nicely.
But the steering is way too assisted, the seating position is uncomfortable (designed for little old ladies I assume), and there's nowhere to put your left foot (why do they do that?).
Not quite as good as the Toyota Corrola I had last time I hired a car, but still much much better to drive than that horrid Honda Jazz.

Insufficient caster on the MK1s; it makes it feel as if the steering's broken. Plus the heavy flywheel over-runs the engine on full-bore upshifts.
There was a somewhat worserer review of the Reno version on here somewhere recently.

I've had the Note for hire when driving in Poland, I used the 1.5 turbo-diesel for the longest trip - about 1600 miles in total. I thought it was a great car overall, well chosen compromises throughout, and I've never driven anything with such good fuel economy. I found it very comfortable even when driving 6 hours at a time. It has enough performance for a good driver to make it quick enough on the road. I'm actually thinking of buying one for the business, they can be picked up for pin-money now - they depreciate fairly heavily.
The only other similar cars I've driven are the Yaris and the Jazz, the Note leaves them well and truly in the shade. It feels more well put together than VW's to me too.
Didn't rate the 1.4 petrol as highly, but I was only using this for short runs.
The standard of driving on Poland's roads puts ours to shame - it's as though no-one risks driving unless they're competent enough to do so. Maybe why their insurance is so cheap.
