I had silver on black plates on my 02 S. Never had a problem, never even stopped.

I had a MGB that was chasis plate 1971 but registered date 1976. Although I got it with modern plates I had black and ally plates made for it that and never had a problem. you often see MX5s with faux old plates or negative plate stickers on the bonnet.

Not a good look on a modern car IMO and very obvious on a newer car but as with My MGB if the plates look like they fit the era I don't think you'll have a problem.
