Just got back last night from a 4 day road trip. The plan was for a day at the Nurburgring and some nights out thrown in as well. Some of my mates did it last year so they came up with nights out in Amsterdam, Berlin and Frankfurt! We got the overnight ferry Hull - Rotterdam annd then full day in Amsterdam. There were 13 guys in 6 cars. My ride was a Cayman S although i wanted to take the S, it needs a service etc and its going to be for sale soon so didnt fancy anything happening to it abroad! The drive to Berlin was a fair way, approx 650kms. We cruised most of the way although had a run in with the police who came for a chat in the service station after apparently receiving a call about english cars undertaking and speeding through restricted sections of autobahn! We did have numbers on for a bit of fun and the woman police officer was keen to find out what they meant.. especially the RS6 (number 69! ).
I shared the driving in the Cayman and a couple of times the opportunity arose to fully open it up and saw 165 and 168mph quite easily. The day after going to berlin, a nice gentle downhill section appeared which seemed to stretch out for a couple of miles and my mate opened it up fully.. the digital readout showed 184mph.. not bad for a standard Cayman S!
Think it was the Aston that got most attention while driving (not just for the 007 numbers on it!) and whenever we went through a tunnel, it wasnt hard to heard where he was! The noise you normally only get at 4000rpm comes all the time on his thanks to removal of a fuse!
RS6 was the quickest car, having just been remapped to 520bhp and sports exhaust. He was a bit upset though as the speed limiter was supposed to have been removed but it just stopped when it hit 170! The Aston and the Cayman were perfectly matched speed wise, a couple of roll on tests at 70 showed no difference in acceleration.
Having never visited the Ring, i was a pretty apprehensive about driving it, especially in my mates car and not my own! We decided on doing 4 laps, 2 each as i dont think it wanted car to be too punished.. and i dont blame him! Having spent a fair bit of time on GT4 in the past, i sort of knew which corners to expect but i was so suprised by the gradients involved! Its an awesome place but we took it reasonably steady, left PSM switched on (although it wasnt intrusive at all). The Cayman tackled the Ring very well, and 3 laps virtually in a row and there was no brake fade at all. The RS6 boiled it brake fluid after just one lap!
We were at the Ring on Monday12th which was a german bank holiday so it was packed with some amazing cars. It seemed like every other car going round was a 911! That said, all the 4 cars we saw crashed at the side during our 4 laps were 911s (3 were 993s!). I was also suprised just how many english registered cars there were there.
Downsides to the trip were an Elise rolling back into my mates Cayman on the track in the queue (he paid out some euros!) and the 911 with us got a blow out on route to Berlin so he had a slow journey on his space saver until he got to the Ring and managed to get a rear tyre from Porsche GB.
I'll definitely be going back there again, its certainly one place you need to visit if you're a petrol head! Mileage was 1600 miles round trip back to Sheffield. Here are pics of my mates cars that went..
Sure is! We did 2 roll on tests and the only difference was who accelerated first! Guess the extra weight of the Aston evens things up for the difference in BHP.
You must have a trusting mate to let you out in the Cayman I really like them.
911's are common as muck there - and I too was surprised by the amount of British exotica there...
Yeah, wish we could have spent longer there. Would make sure had a full day next time but it was a good introduction to the Ring!
007 was just for fun for the trip!
I was insured to drive the Cayman abroad but obviously on the Ring, it was uninsured. Guess he was sat next to me keeping on eye on things but i was able to drive 2 pretty quick laps (around 10mins including slowing for 2 accidents so i was pretty pleased!
How was it for noise tests etc? I've heard about people not getting on the track due to noise and modifications.
The more I see the Caymens the more I like them. The 12 hour race (same weekend, last year) was being dominated by them. Seemed to be more balanced than the 997s, especially in the wet.
I've posted a video on youtube so i'll link it whens its processed.. shows the entrance and 911s are everywhere!
Jamie, it was shame that my mate in the 911 got a blow out but it seemed rapid! He was able to pull away from us but we didnt get chance for a proper roll test on the autobahn like we did with the Aston.
