someone once told me that the garage owner in question has some serious enemies

all connected with business practice

That fits with things posted on a similar thread about this story on PistonHeads - by reputation, Richard Lukins, the owner of the bodyshop where it happened and presumably the owner of the car that the guy thought he was trashing, is seemingly an unsavoury character of rather dubious business ethics.

But distinct from the fine, the court also has the power (in certain circumstances, anyway) to order a defendant to a criminal charge to make restitution to the victim.

Quite why the trial judge didn't do so here, I have no idea. Perhaps there are limitations on the circumstances in which it can be imposed - I don't know.
