Default Overdriven Images?

Prompted by Nick Graves’ comment that he thinks that the images in the GTR sales brochure are overdriven and reminiscent of Playboy and Penthouse magazines from the seventies, I thought I would do a little research.

Unfortunately our stash in the loft only goes up to 1969, when I became Mr Q’s permanent Playmate. Thought you might be interested to see pics from this September 1969 edition. I was surprised that these are the only images of cars and bikes in 314 pages.

Think this makes the Midget look quite cool. Saz had one and loved it.

In this, VW brackets its Karmann Ghia with a Maserati Mexico and a Ferrari GTB4. Wonder what gad thinks about that?

Weird sexist ad! The tyre has a man’s face and the naked woman is melded to the tread.

Had to deal with the nips on this one.

The following three dreamy, blurry images look very Flower Power to me. It is after all only two years after The Summer Of Love.

Very colour co-ordinated!

I’ve included this as an extra. I thought the size of the computer would amuse the IT bods.

Fast forward twenty years. These two images are from my Elan brochure from 1989. The first I find bitty and lacking in style. The second lacks imagination.

This from the S2000 brochure 2006. Stylish-looking pic of a Bermuda Blue.

This is how Aston went about it in the 2009 brochure. Quite a restrained pic but featuring one of their lairyest colours.

I would be interested to see pics from the medallion man era that Nick referred to. Bet he has got some copies of Car squirreled away for the pearls of wisdom of his hero LJK Setright.

Would also be interested to see pics from car brochures that others like and have kept and to hear what appealed to them.

Its interesting to see how manufacturers have changed their marketing strategies over the decades.
