Default Pistonheads old classics

Not sure if this has been done but from time to time i scan pistonheads to look at the cars i liked when i was growing up an wonder if anyone else does the same?

Today it's this.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3250098.htm 1986 M535i

If had 3k spare and a big enough garage, that would be in there without a 2nd thought!

Interested to see what other people pick out from the adverts.

My garage is already full of old classics!

No, I tend to realise they're all time & money pits and I CBA. Also most classics are, in truth, crap to drive.

I do look at weird shit like Grinnall Scorpions too much though!

My BiL had an M535i as a daily drive up until just recently.
The reality is slightly less than than the dream as per Nick above.
Big thirst, lots of "niggles" and he said that he felt like a kazakh gangster driving round in it.
Still, crossed off the bucket list, and depreciation was minimal.

That's more the idea Nick it's not a serious thing but one of those 'wouldn't it be nice' things. That said, Grinnals aren't expensive, they're built on a good bike underneath and they don't take up much garage space

I was never taken with the 6 or 7 series, 3 series was nice enough but i grew up being ferried about in a 518i, 520i and finally an M535i ... always felt better built than every other car I remembered at the time.

Even in the scrapyards ( remember the days when you could go rooting around them) every 5 series of that era you found, no matter how wrecked it was, the doors and boot always shut with a thunk even if every other panel was a mess.

The Grinnall seems to be the perfect antidote to the modern Armoured Personnel Carrier!

The older BMWs were indeed solidly, if stolidly, built. They never got the body proportions or the suspension right until the excellent E32/4/6 series of the late '80s, as a result of which a lot ended up upside down in ditches.

A friend can well testify...

Don't laugh, but, I have always wanted a roadster/sporty type (and next year hopefully, my 30 year wait will be over)
but years ago when I was around 18 my dream car was a TR7, I did a lot of lusting over this car,but I did the right thing and bought a black mk2 escort RS2000. (wish I had kept that one)A TR7 came up for sale near me a few months ago and I had to go see it.
I have to agree with Nick Graves though, older cars are crap, my teenage dream was shattered viewing this ''classic'' as the vendor called it.
It might never have been a classic to start with, but I don't think I would pay a premium for an old jalope, and apart from the premium my old RS2000 costs these days,I have been in one of these and am amazed at how out of date and basic it is, compared to today's cars.
And also the engine bay on older cars look so huge and empty, compared to today's modern car same size space and you can hardly get a screw driver in there.

As Nick might agree ..... there is something moderately appealing about something which is fun, mechanically basic and devoid of FREDS. As wayward and rotten as some of the older stuff is it's still a lot of fun to drive. What you might lose in running costs, you won't be losing in depreciation.
