Pistonheads old classics
As Nick might agree ..... there is something moderately appealing about something which is fun, mechanically basic and devoid of FREDS. As wayward and rotten as some of the older stuff is it's still a lot of fun to drive. What you might lose in running costs, you won't be losing in depreciation.

It'd be fun to try an X-1/9 again, just to see how recollections have been changed with experience. The NSX reminds me of it a lot in terms of handling & feel (the FIAT turned in better, despite its high, wobbly sidewalls) but the memory is unreliable.
I once drove a really immaculate HB Viva and was amazed by the lightness & precision of its controls at learner speeds. Of course, once it got properly moving, it all went Pete Tong and I realised how poor they actually are by then-standards.
I'd never turn down the opportunity to try anything like that again. But to own?
I recently had a local Citroeniste trying to keep up with my 'Lude through Hertofrd in a late DS; it showed that they were outstandingly capable, but it looked like a chase from a 70s French classic in my mirrors. Where's Alain Delon with a shooter, then?
So whatever you buy would have to be pretty fast back then. And that probably means expensive.
There is an Evante for sale on PH; an Elan V2 made with Escort bits, so it's cheap & affordable. Might be a good compromise...
I know i'm not remotely from anywhere near Dagenham .... and a 3.0 Capri isn't exactly sensible but as something fun to slide about in ...
The problem as always is disposable and it applies to everyone except the super rich
