Default Possible return to F1 for Honda

Since being an S2000 owner, I've been quite disappointed about Honda's recent activity and performance in F1, or lack thereof. So here's hoping they can return stronger than before, in a new Turbo era in 2014.

Is this the start of a "test the water" exercise that will see the return of McLaren-Honda?

That's what the FIA is planning: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_engines#2014

I watched the GP3 race a few weeks ago and those cars are running turbo engines.
I was thoroughly disappointed by the complete lack of engine noise caused by the turbo being in the way.
When the F1 cars adopt these types of engines i think it really will be a sad day indeed. Screaming N/A engines are one of the best things about watching Formula 1 cars

What do car manufacturers like Honda get out of this? I can see the relationship between Ferrari road cars and their F1 counterparts as far as tech goes, but Honda, really?

It's not like Honda have not done small displacement high Turbo horsepower before. And F1 has been there before as well.

Championship winning engines.

I hope they come back!

Me too. When I watched the GP3 cars at Silverstone last year the noise was a big let down ...

Apparently they're changing GP3 cars next year to have higher revving (and more powerful) engines to make them sound a bit more racing car like. Because, yes they do sound like lawnmowers.

And no, F1 won't be like that. That's part of the reason it's going to be V6 1.6 engines. Everybody felt the original suggestion of 4-cyl units would compromise the sound of F1 too much.

I hope this Honda rumour turns out to be true, but if they're going to do it, 2014 would be the time. It's expected that Cosworth will drop out, leaving only Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari supplying engines to F1, so you can see why it would be attractive to Honda to beat them. And McLaren could be the team to do it with too, as they're relegated to having to pay for customer Mercedes engines from next year.

Don't forget that Honda are currently running 2.2lV6 turbos in Indycar...
