Tell me about it....

Bloody hell - that AMG Merc is a lot of car for the money. And I hadn't realised that M5s had now dropped to those kind of prices (although I'd guess the colour has something to do with it in that case....)

A lot more choice if we keep the Clio for Jenny to drive if she needs to go out while I'm at work. Hmmmm.

I've never been a huge fan of Imprezas or Evos, at least in part because of the servicing intervals and running costs, but I suppose that I should at least bear them in mind. Do they really cost as much to run as apocryphally seems to be the case....?
What about a fully specced Legacy (estate or saloon). For your budget, you'll get something at around 12 months old.

Plenty of poke, and to an extent gets round any badge snobbery issues ...

Buy the Scooby. The only added cost is fuel and that probably won't be any different from some of the others on the list.

They are very reliable so long as you don't try to get 400bhp out of them, and they haven't been owned by chavs, and the service intervals are 12k or one year. Buy an 06 2.5 estate with under 20k miles for

You mentioned the RS4, but why not consider the S4 or S6 - 340bhp!! Plenty of S6 Avants about and a very classy car.

Beat me to it.

If it's not too big and thirsty, the manual version of mine (Spec B).

It'll be cheaper to run than the Impreza.

...and if you squint *really* hard the flat 6 sounds like a porker

Id go with what you are thinking, GTi or R32, ive owned the mk4 and loved it, solid, fun, safe and feels like a bigger car. The mk5, low spec can be had for 20/22k. Im a big fan of vag cars and apart from the shape of the new r32 found it a lovely drive, well built, solid (bit plasticky but all golfs are). The dsg was a bit dull and took away the feeling of acceleration.
Mk 4 is now out of warranty and although good cars are still lurking around 16k their sem to be a few that have been chipped and modded.
Id probably go for a 5 door gti. The anniversary one they released a year or so ago was a good drive too, felt quicker than the r32 and a bit more nimble.
Good luck.

I was in the same boat as you.

In the end I went for a 5 door Focus ST. It was between that and the Golf GTi for me. In the end the wonderful characterful motor of the ST won me over.

I've had it 18 months which is the longest I've owned a car for some years, and done 35000 miles in it and I'm still very happy with it.

Some people find them thirsty but I get 25mpg, exactly the same as my S2000 did on the same mixture of driving. The Gold GTi is reputedly a lot less thirsty if that is an issue for you.
