Default RAC Car data check .

Went to look at a car last saturday liked it agreed a price deal done.

The car was on a private plate at the time which the owner said he was in the prossess of changing it back .

Yesterday i did a vehicle data check through the rac website and it did not recognise the reg number.

i rang the seller and asked for the vin number , v5 doc serial numer which i tried agin through the rac website with the same results .

I rang the dvla today to ask advice , they asked me for the reg number that it was going back too (not the private plate ), they asked me the car details and it all matched on there system she siad it was on just changed back though she said the rac system will not be as up to date as the dvla. .
I rang the seller agin and explained i was having problems i told him i may have wrote the vin number down wrong , he has just emailed me a copy of the v5 so i could check and i had wrote in down correct.

So can anyone tell me how i do a hpi check before i hand over the money which is meant to be this weekend so i'm running out of time.

Any help will be appreciated .

I had a similar thing with my Merc in that the number it was going back to, for which plates had already been made up and put on the car by the dealer, showed nothing on an HPI check. However, using the private plate pulled up the correct details.

To an extent I had to take the dealer's word for it but as he gave me the seller's contact details, I was relaxed. All worked out fine in the end. There was quite a lag before the various HPI sites were updated so I don't know whether that's them or the DVLA.

Do you NEED to pick it up this weekend? And I don't mean petrolhead type need.

If you can wait, I'd be tempted to hang on. You can never be too careful.

this is what i think has happened.

Should i try the hpi on the private plates ?.

I think the seller has nothing to hide as they have been very open with information they siad on the day i went to see that i could take it to any garage for an inspection they also had no problem with a vehicle inspection.

I just want 100% peace of mind.

If you don't know anybody in the trade who can hpi it for you how about trying an insurance quote online? don't put in any details other than the reg number and see what car it comes back with.

If you are using the RAC website it will allow you to enter the reg number and it will return the car make & model for free prior to you completing a HPI

Does this link give you expected information on either the new or old reg?

http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortal...event=link.next

Go onto hpicheck.com

try both reg's. If either of them return the correct vehicle make, and you get to this point before you actually pay for the check, then you might be ok.
