Just bought an HR-V. Not very big but great fun if a bit thirsty. Not as common as a CR-V which you see on every street corner.

My dad has now done 70k miles on his 2005 diesel CRV.

MPG (mostly longish runs) sits at mid 40s.

Nothing has gone wrong other than self inflicted removal of bottom radiator hose 20k miles ago after driving over tree stump (still going fine after total power failure and subsequent refilling of water!).

Not bad to drive.

Interior looks very drab - plain, hard plastics - but sturdy, and surprisingly comfortable on long runs (aircon and cruise as standard on my dad's car).

Recently towed 2.5 tonnes of boat and trailer quite happily, great in snow, going on to beach to tow dinghies, low boot for dogs to jump into/loading.

Very impressive bit of kit.

Thanks for all the info lads, appreciated.

As Ill be doing a few miles, sounds like the CRV would be the best option. I didtn think I would get an FRV in the budget but thought it may be worth looking anyway. Ill have a wee look at Subaru as well.

Thanks again.

Soulcrew, Im happy for you car advice but remind me never to take relationship advice from you!

I like the Forrester but last time I changed I couldn't find one with the spec/age/milage I was looking for so I ended up getting another CRV.

Actually, even the regular estates are brilliant cars & as cheap as rubbish.

They are also such an old plank, they drive nicely too.

i was following one of the big audis the other day on the a52.. q7?

it surprised me tbh, he was giving it hell on the bends and it looked fairly composed for a 2ton 7ft high tank

he struggled to overtake a lorry though

err.. that's all, they're probably out of that budget

What about a Volvo Estate?

V50/V70 diesel for example.
