Default Sat Nav

I'm thinking of getting a new sat nav for XMas as I can't put a map of France on my Tom TOm One v3 (well I cn but I need to delete the UK map first)

Seeing as the Tom Tom map of France is £40 and Halfords are knocking out new European Garmins for as little as £80 (the Nuvi 50) but as my preference is to stick with Tom Tom because I won't have to change the hardwiring in my cars..I thought I'd see what the S2ki's collective views are.

I did a bit of research for when I bought my daughter one a few weeks ago. The research threw up comments from others that some models that had UK and Europe maps, also had a limited memory size. When they tried to update their maps, via computer/internet, the update froze as the device ran out of storage memory. As the update overwrites the existing maps there was no way back. After loads of calls to Tomtom, over many weeks, they were only able to resolve the problem by Tomtom talking them though reverting to an earlier iteration of the map which they had sent them. Not my idea of trouble free operation though and not an isolated case!

The model I got was the XL2; has all you need for a basic sat nav; can’t fault it. However, I only needed the UK version, so a cheap basic model was all I needed/wanted. I am not sure if they have now resolved this issue but you might want check it’s not Halfords’ old stock.

Navfree seems OK.

Obviates the requirement for yet another costly FRED.

Have a look at this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-2455L...964233&sr=1-13

Includes Route/Itinerary planning so you can join in with S2000 convoys too.

I've got the TomTom 1005 full Europe. It's a very good sat nav and was voted best sat nav by the gadget show.
I use it everyday for trucking all over Europe. I've been to every country in Western Europe and never had a problem in 2 yrs with this device.
With the storage space problem. It was people trying to update more than 1 thing at once. I had the same problem and it was sorted straight away by TomTom.
Tried a Garmin once and it was back at Halfords within 24 hours because I didn't find it anywhere near as good as a TomTom.

Give TomTom a call, they will normally do you a deal. Last week, I bought 5 units off them and ended up with £200 discount.
