Speeding and the law etc.
OK, we all know that speeding is such a heinous crime and that we will all burn in hell etc etc etc.
However what law are you actually breaking.
OK, the point, say for instance on a Saturday morning you are driving on the M4 at a nice speed of 85mph, the road is clear, weather conditions are good etc etc etc.
You go under a bridge and only notice at the last minute that there was a camera van over the bridge. You don't bother braking as you have already been caught and carry on your merry little way.
Oh well, at least the rest of the road will be free of camera vans etc.
2 miles further down the road there is another camera van on the bridge, with the camera facing the same way. You only see it at the last minute so are caught again.
So............
Do you receive 2 NIP's as you have gone through 2 cameras so have broken the speed limit at a fixed spot twice.
Receive 1 NIP as they are linked etc.
Receive 2 NIP's and are able to challenge 1 of them, as you have not broken the speed limit twice, only once ???
So what's the answer ??
Was going to do this as a poll but obviously being a cheap skate guest it appears I can't start a new poll ??

I remember a story (not sure about the truth of it) about a guy who got 9/12 points before the NIPs arrived (can't remember if it was a single, or multiple trips), he argued that if a policeman had pulled him, he'd have changed his driving.
I think he got 3 points and a hefty fine instead IIRC.

I think they have you twice. Speeding is the only offence I can think of where you can be "caught" but the act of catching does not, by definition, stop the crime. If you were caught beating someone up they wouldn't let you carry on would they?
Logic would say you've commited one offence. But since when did logic apply to speeding offences.

You should only get 1 IMO, reasoning being that if a police car had been tailing you for that distance at that speed you'd only be done once.
However, I reckon that they'd probably try to get you for both

I think the beaks have a certain discretion in this type of case. A few years ago a friend hurrying home down the M5 South had the misfortune to trigger either 3 or 4 cameras in the 50 mph limit that applied to the roaworks around Bristol. AFAI recall he just got the one fine and the one lot of points.
Normally only one camera on a set route would be 'live' to stop this problem ..... but there is nothing to stop them doing it unfortunately ! And if your journey was a reasonable length then the odds of getting a second live camera increase.
The thing is, if I were a Magistrate (oh, how I wish
) I wouldn't be too impressed with the CPS putting a case forward to give a driver say 12 points in one go for speeding over a couple of miles on one road on one journey .....
