The first one is just bizarre
But done the second a lot. It's just a way of confirming it's in first, not third imo

I always take it out of gear when waiting at lights etc, was told it could burn the clutch bearings out if i held the clutch down whilst waiting all the time.

not sure how true that is, but always take it out now just incase.

By selecting neutral (and applying the handbrake) when stationary for any period you not only reduce the wear on the clutch you also remove the risk of your foot slipping of the pedals and possibly shunting you into the car in front. Also if you do get shunted from behind then the risk of feet slipping and the engine assisting the forward momentum into the car in front is removed.

In answer to the OP...I often find that on a long drive at a constant sustained speed I'll take it out of 6th gear and put it back in to check that I'm really in 6th not 4th...high revving engines

I always double check to see if I am in first, I never drive with my hands on the wheel at 10 to 2 or 1/4 to 3 as the book says, I am more pimp 5 tips to the top of the wheel style or one hand at 2 oclock and the other on the gearshift when racing.

Yep - do that occasionally.

My friend has an annoying habit of a running commentary when driving.

'so are you going to indicate'
'now how did I know you was going to do that'
'well tell me what you are doing'
'knob'
'that's right, speed up and brake'

etc etc etc

i was told to ALWAYS stay in gear while at traffic lights - that way if someone bumps you from behind you dont go shooting forward in to traffic and the car will stall...

Same here. Especially after driving one of the work mobiles or the 968.
